I keep saying I’ll do more book reviews, and then failing to, so the next good intention is to post up here books that I’ve read and enjoyed/found useful for those of you that are interested in that sort of thing to be able to follow up.
If I do this every six to twelve months (rather than every few years) it might be of some service.
Underneath the cover images of the titles are links to buy the books (or to read more about them) at evil behemoth Amazon, and Bookshop.org (UK only). I will make a few pence (it’s literally something like 1% if you buy anything off the link), so perhaps I can make a cup of coffee out of you all by this time next year.
There’s not any fiction listed below, but for Londonophiles let me commend the Slow Horses series by Mick Herron (link here) and the Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch (link here)

My ‘book of the year’ (the best one I read in 2024 about London), is this memoir from Robert Elms. A mix of personal recollection, London stories, a history of his childhood and his family life around Shepherds Bush/North Kensington, and a lament for a lost London (although, as he himself is aware, this is really a lament for lost youth).
It’s a great read, and an extended love letter to the capital, a city that never stands still (for good or ill) and which is always reinventing itself.
